Where to take the STCW course?

STCW – Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping is a convention recognized worldwide and the marine industry benchmark for safety.

It is considered one of the main basic certifications required by any green crew starting their way in the yachting industry.

What is the IMO Whitelist?

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) maintains a “White List” which is a list of countries who have been confirmed by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) to be following the relevant provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

So before making any decision of where to do your STCW certification, make sure that it’s in a place covered on the Whitelist of countries.

Where to go?

Yes, there are always the schools located in the yachting hubs. Fort Lauderdale, Antibes, Palma, UK.

Although the benefit there is getting to know the industry up and close, the downside is that it can be quite expensive, and as a green crew, you need to be smart with your money.

Why South Africa for STCW?

The South African Rand is relatively weak compared to the Euro and US Dollar and therefore studying in SA makes it more affordable. Don’t let a weaker currency fool you, South Africa has just been approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to remain on the “Whitelist” for their STCW courses, while many other countries are still at risk. This shows the commitment of the Maritime Authority and Institutions such as SSTG to training seafarers on an international standard.
